Harvesting Rainwater

Irrigation is the use of watering methods and techniques that have been used over many centuries and there are many ways of putting the methods into practice. Irrigation has proven to be a successful system for agricultural, farming, crop and vegetation growth. Its a way of providing crops, plants, vegetation with consistant water for a period of time to improve growth and produce.

Irrigation is being used more frequent today as there are so many different types of irrigation systems on the market aimed for domestic house holds and larger scale systems for commercial. One of the common irrigation systems is the sprinkler system which where water is piped through a spray or gun and occasionally the head is rotated so that it reaches a large area scale. You may see irrigation sprinklers used on farming land or used in the fields during the summer months when the ground gets extremely dry and dead. Drip irrigation is another technique that is commonely used but proven to be more costly than the sprinkler system. Drip irrigation is a system put into place with trickling water and it reduces water contact with crop and plant leaves, stems, and fruit, so more water goes directly to the roots where its needed. Drip irrigation is more beneficial to agricultural applications where a larger scale system can be put into place and work more effectively and cost effective. The drip irrigation system has proven to be effective with vegetables and crops such as onions, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, tomato, and cotton.

Another irrigation system that is probably one of the most common used is surface irrigation and this is where water is applied and distributed over the soil surface by gravity. It is often referred to as flood irrigation and its basically where the water is allowed to flow in a area of land. As the water moves down into the garden area, it will be directed through furrows or allowed to go into a puddle once it has reached the far end of the growing field. Once the area is irrigated to the satisfaction of the grower, the supply is shut off at the point of entry to the field, and the water is absorbed into the ground.

As we all know irrigation is a system and a method that no matter what technique you use it uses a lot of water at a period of time. You can use a rainwater harvesting system and attach a irrigation system to it, however because it uses a lot of water you may require a larger rainwater harvesting tank. All of our rainwater harvesting tanks come with a bottom outlet for attachments of hoses, irrigation systems etc, so it really depends on personal choice and how much water and what periods of the year you are looking to use a irrigation system.
